FACTS ABOUT THE TALE OF GENJI - The Tale of Genji is the word's first novel and was written in 1010 - The influence of the Heian Aristocracy is apparent in the writing of the first novel, even though the author doesn't mention it. - In the Heian aristocracy it was considered rude to mention somebody more powerful then you by name. - Japan continues to have a culture that traditionally reveres powerful persons. - In the tale of Genji the characters have no names as a result of the respect shown to Japanese aristocracy even fictional members of the aristocracy are not referred to by their names.
